How long can trees live?
It was long thought that the giant sequoias iSequoiadendron giganteum) that grow along the middle Pacific coast of the United States were the oldest living trees in the world. Some are nearly 4,000 years old. But a few decades ago it was discovered that another conifer tree that grows in North America is even older: the bristlecone pine tree, found in Nevada, Arizona, and southern California. The oldest known living tree of this kind is 4,600 years old.
