Can pets see what's on television?

When dogs and cats look at the television, they don't see the same things that you do. They can see little or no color and can't identify objects that appear on the flat screen. But they are attracted to the movement that they see on television. Action on the screen probably stirs their hunting instincts, making them think they are watching small, scurrying prey. Dogs and cats may also show interest in some of the sounds that come from television shows. A dog barking on TV may make your pet dog bark back, or a ringing doorbell in a TV show might prompt your dog to get up and go to the door

What is the most widely read book in the world?

The world's best-selling book is the Bible. During the past two centuries alone, it has sold an estimated 3.88 billion copies. How can you tell if a mushroom is poisonous?

Many types of mushrooms are good to eat. The fruiting bodies of other fungi-like truffles and puffballs-are also tasty. But there are many mushrooms that are poisonous, and it is very hard to tell the harmful from the harmless. So you should never pick and eat a mushroom. Only an expert, who has studied the different types, can tell the difference for sure.

People have been eating mushrooms for thousands of years. Because they contained some protein and minerals, they were an important source of food at times when fruits and vegetables were not available. Now they are grown commercially, like other food crops. What is the deadliest mushroom?

The most poisonous mushroom is the death cap toadstool (Amanita phalloides). It is commonly found where beech and oak trees grow. Even a small piece of it can kill, usually within 6 to 15 hours. Unlike some poisonous plants, the poison of the death cap toadstool is not destroyed by cooking.

How long can trees live?

It was long thought that the giant sequoias iSequoiadendron giganteum) that grow along the middle Pacific coast of the United States were the oldest living trees in the world. Some are nearly 4,000 years old. But a few decades ago it was discovered that another conifer tree that grows in North America is even older: the bristlecone pine tree, found in Nevada, Arizona, and southern California. The oldest known living tree of this kind is 4,600 years old.

How big is the universe?

How big is the universe?

Scientists have demonstrated that the universe is expanding in size, with galaxies moving farther from one another (objects within a galaxy, like the planets in our solar system, don't move away from each other, however, because they are held together by gravity). Because distances in space are so huge, scientists often use the measurement of light-years instead of miles to describe them. A light-year is the distance that light can travel through space in one year, which is 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion kilometers). The farthest galaxies that can be seen from Earth are thought to be 12 billion to 14 billion light-years away. That means that the observable universe has a diameter of up to 28 billion light-years. And that's just the galaxies we can see-imagine if we could stand at the edge of one of the farthest galaxies, look through a telescope, and see galaxies extending 14 billion light-years from there. The potential size of the universe is mind-boggling. It is nearly impossible to imagine the distance of one light-year, let alone 14 billion of them!

Will the Sun ever burn out?

Will the Sun ever burn out?

It is believed that the Sun-like all stars-will burn out eventually. As a star uses up the hydrogen that fuels the nuclear reactions that power it, it is thought to die, collapsing in upon itself. But it's unlikely this will happen in the near future: our Sun is expected to shine for at least another five billion years.
Our galaxy, the Milky Way, has some hundred billion stars.

What is heaven?

What is heaven?

According to many religions based on Judaism and Christianity, heaven is a state of existence where a person's spirit is at last united with God forever. In a number of Christian religions, heaven is believed to be the reward for people who have lived good lives according to certain rules of thought and behavior that God has made known through scriptures (sacred writings, like the Bible) and through the teachings of churches and religious leaders. (Those who have not followed these rules, it is believed by many, go to a place of punishment known as hell.) Many Christians believe that at the end of the world their human forms will be resurrected in a perfect state-just as the body of Jesus Christ was, when he arose from the dead on Easter morning-and join their souls or spirits in heaven for eternity. This idea has led to the concept that heaven is an actual place-located above-with physical characteristics. Over the centuries, through pictures and writings, people have tried to create images of heaven, imagining a place of perfect happiness perched atop fluffy white clouds. It has often been portrayed as a place full of things that would bring happiness on Earth, possessing, for instance, pearly gates and streets of gold.
